Grimsetter Met Office

Grimsetter was originally built as an RAF fighter base in WORLD WAR 2 and was commissioned in 1942 prior to being transferred to the Admiralty in 1943 when it became Royal Navy Air Station- “HMS Robin”. The airfield was relinquished by the MOD in 1949 and became the civilian airport for Orkney in Jan 1950, succeeding Hatston, and remains so to the present day. A Met Office was set up in 1950 and was manned 24 hr a day with a resident forecaster until 2000 when the station was down-manned and became an automatic weather station
