Orkney is made up of 17 inhabited islands – there are actually over 60 islands in the group. The smallest has one family residing on the island and the Mainland has 17,200 people living on it. The capital is Kirkwall with a population of 7,045 with Stromness as a second town with 1,758 residents. The main industry is farming along with the allied services. Other employment is in the oil industry, fishing, distilling and brewing, construction, marine renewables, various craft industries and tourism.
